Unknown gunmen have kidnapped two Chinese workers and killed a policeman in Edo State, a police spokesman said on Friday.

The abductions took place on Wednesday on the outskirts of Benin City, the state capital, Edo state police commissioner Dan Malam Mohammed told news reporters, adding that the two workers were employed by a company called Time Multinational.

According to the police spokesman “The abductors have not made any contact but we are tracking them,” Mohammed said. “No arrest has been made yet.”

At the time of reporting no further details were immediately available. Kidnappings are common in southern Nigeria.

Kidnapping has remained the most virulent form of banditry in Nigeria. It has become the most pervasive and intractable violent crime in the country.

Nigeria has one of the world’s highest rates of kidnap-for-ransom cases. Other countries high up on the list included Venezuela, Mexico, Yemen, Syria, the Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
